The budget cuts proposed by the White House would trim several farm programs, including crop insurance.  Agriculture Secretary Sonny Purdue was recently asked what he said to Office of Management and Budget officials during the crafting of the budget proposal.

"It's not appropriate to talk about my private conversation with O-M-B...but we were advocates for the American farmer."

As far as the question of government-subsidized crop insurance is concerned,

"We believe that crop insurance is a viable part of the safety net and certainly from the subsidy...we believe that the American public gets a good deal for that."

Perdue says it costs less money than impromptu disaster bills.  The Ag Secretary also noted it's up to the Congress, when crafting a new Farm Bill the fate of all farm programs.
