A lawsuit filed by Cattle Producers of Washington (CPoW) and R-CALF to bring back Country-of-Origin Labeling will be held in the federal district court located in Spokane on March 13th.  CPoW and R-CALF seek to reinstate a portion of COOL requiring beef and pork imported from foreign countries to retain their origin labels all the way to the consumer.  CPoW leaders allege the USDA is knowingly violating U.S. law by not requiring meatpackers to carry forward the country-of-origin labels that are on the packages and containers when meat is imported, so that origin information is passed along to consumers rather than stripped off the products.

CPoW allege the USDA is allowing meatpackers to remove origin labels even after the agency itself, its attorneys, and the Congressional Research Service have acknowledged that the USDA’s regulations are in conflict with U.S. law.

The hearing, which starts at 2:30 p.m., will be open to the public and held at:

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT EASTERN DISTRICT OF WASHINGTON

Thomas S. Foley United States Courthouse
920 West Riverside Ave, Room 840
Spokane, WA 99201
