The Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting is underway now through Thursday in Aurora, CO.  The U.S. Meat Export Federation said the group comes together twice a year to discuss current issues, as well as work on programs and initiatives.  And one of the topics that will take center stage is trade.

USMEF’s Hugh Sandburg, previously served as co-chair of the Beef Checkoff Program’s Export Growth committee.  He said that time showed him the much larger picture of the value of exports.

“It’s been an eye opening and rewarding position to fill, and seeing the amount of population that we have outside of our borders which is about 95% it drives home the importance of exports for the beef producers in this country.”

Sandburgh said all demand is important, both domestic and international.  He added, from his view, there’s a lot of room for growth when it comes to those export markets.

“We often talk about the Pacific Rim, which is certainly hugely important to us, but I don’t think most people realize how far up the ladder if you will, Mexico and Canada are to us.  I didn’t realize how much product that we moved that way.”
