Getting Kids Connected To Careers In Horticulture
This is Seed Your Future's Green Career Week, a time to educate the next generation about the jobs and opportunities that exist in the horticultural sector. Erin Nessmith, Green Career Week Program Head, said many young people don't appreciate the wide variety and diversity in the horticulture, floriculture, and agriculture industry.
"And it's really important that we shine light onto the fact that it's not just mowing grass, that there is a lot of science and finances and business and artistic sides to our green industries that students really do need to know about," Nessmith said. "We want to make horticulture as appealing as teaching or law or medicine because it truly is."

Address Local & Global Challenges
Throughout the week Seed Your Future will host educational programs and workshops to connect students across Washington to the hundreds of job and career opportunities. Nessmith added green careers can include researchers, scientists, retailers and more, contributing to solving food security, sustainability and other local and global challenges.
"It takes all of us encouragement to the industry to get involved and to open their doors to students because while we do have social media and other opportunities to have platforms to share all about green careers, there is something really special about local connection," she said. "And so just an encouragement to our local industry to invite students and have those conversations and get them excited about plants."
