Breadlab Research Paused Due To Doge Cuts
Due to federal cuts and changes in D.C., Washington State University’s Bread Lab announced last month it has been ordered to cease spending a five-year, $10 million Soil to Society grant. The funding came through the USDA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative’s Sustainable Agriculture Systems program. WSU said they were in year three of the five-year multidisciplinary research effort.
School officials add this pause amounts to a $2.5 million loss in funding, including salaries for several Breadlab staff, and operating funds for WSU’s wheat, barley, perennial grains and quinoa breeding projects. WSU added the research in this specific project was focused on creating more nutritious, affordable and accessible whole grain-based foods.
