Earlier this month, the Benton Franklin Fair donated $2,005 to 2nd Harvest Tri-Cities to help fight regional hunger.  The fair donated $2 for each adult admission ticket sold on opening day before 2 p.m.  An additional $267 was raised during the People’s Choice vote at the BBQ CookOff at the fair on August 26.

“Farmers feed the world and as an agricultural -organization, making sure our community has enough to eat is a priority,” said Duane Howard, fair board president. “Through our partnership with PayneWest Insurance, we are able to provide 10,025 meals for hungry children, families and seniors in the Mid-Columbia through Second Harvest. That’s something we’re very proud of.”

The donation is the equivalent of 12,030 pounds. In the ten years the fair has been supporting 2nd Harvest, it has donated the equivalent of 77,145 meals and more than 92,000 pounds of food.

“The Benton Franklin Fair and Rodeo has helped Second Harvest source more than 92,000 pounds of donated fresh produce and food,” said Holly Siler, regional executive director for Second Harvest. “This kind of support is essential during a time when food insecurity impacts one-in-five children in our community.”
