For growers looking to improve their commodity, test plots are very beneficial for the industry.  But, as 2nd Harvest points out, those test plots can help meet needs right now.  Sarah MacPherson said those test plots can help this time of year, when food donations are sometime low.

“Last year, we received four different test plot of just potatoes, and there were months where we were bringing in five to eight truck loads of potatoes.  And we were able to really push that out where it needed to be.”

MacPherson told the Washington Ag Network they are more than happy to coordinate pickups and deliveries with farmers interested in donating test plots.  And she added those thinking about hosting a test plot in 2018, while you work on your yields, keep 2nd Harvest in mind.

“They think they have to go and turn that field under but we kind of provide this opportunity for both them to move product that they’ve obviously put in a lot of love and time into, and we’re able to translate that into meals for people who need it.  So, it’s a win-win all the way around.”
