2nd Harvest: Ag Community Gives With Such A Generous Heart
While many associate it as a more urban problem, officials with 2nd Harvest say hunger is just as big of a problem in rural communities and the cities. Latest statistics says one-out-of-eight adults, and one-out-of-four children are hungry. And, Sarah MacPherson with 2nd Harvest said that issue is compounded this time of year.
“When heating bills get higher, when kids are in and out of school, which means if they are on free and reduced lunch they no longer have access to that. And a lot of times when people have to choose between heating their house and feeding their family, they will sacrifice a meal or two here and there.”
MacPherson said the ag community does a great job helping those across the Inland Northwest struggling with hunger. Whether that’s individual donations at area food drives, or large corporate donations from farms like Anderson Organic in Othello or Gebbers in North Central Washington.
“That is just amazing to be able to depend on that, because when you are able to plan and forecast then you’re better able to plan out the month, I’m better able to organize our fleet.”
