The spring wheat harvest passed the halfway mark nationally over the weekend.  USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey said this year’s crop is a bit of a disappointment, due to drought here in the Northwest as well as in Montana.

“49% of the spring wheat rated is good to excellent, 18% very-poor to poor. That compares quite unfavorably to last year's final numbers when we wrapped up with 69% good to excellent and 10% very-poor to poor," Rippey said.  "And we will end the season with more than half of Washington's spring wheat, 53% rated very-poor to poor, and almost that much, 49% of the crop in Montana rated very-poor to poor.”

Speaking of Washington, 74% of the spring wheat crop has been harvested, well ahead of the five-year average of 65%.

In Idaho, 65% of this year’s crop has been harvested, up from the 49% five-year average in that state.  Idaho’s quality is faring better, with 43% rated good to excellent, and 18% considered very-poor to poor.
