WSU Organic Farm Giving Back to Food Banks

The Organic Farm at Washington State University is working with area food banks to help provide healthy food to those in need.

Farm Director Brad Jaeckel said the farm has been invested in these partnerships since it began in 2004.

“That part has been really exciting to add to our sales and knowing that we’re keeping the food in the county and using other non-profits to help to get produce out to people farther out in the county that are not here in Pullman.”

The food banks are given grants to buy the food from the farm which can then use the money to fund their work, pay the students for their time and do research.

Jaeckel said it’s also good for the students that work at the farm to be exposed to a wide variety of experiences.

“I think it’s important for the students to know that these opportunities exist all over the country. This is not unique to our county at all.”

Jaeckel encouraged all farmers who want to give back to either donate money to a food bank, or work with food banks in their area who might be looking to purchase healthy options for those in need.
