WSFB: Safety Is A Priority During Harvest
The Washington farm bureau is reminding everyone about equipment safety in the fields and orchards.
“Accidents involving implements take only milliseconds to cause serious injury or death. They're completely preventable,” noted WSFB Safety Director Dominique Damian. She added that the basics can save a life.
"The employees should always conduct a walk around inspection prior to operating each time assess the ground conditions like slope, moisture, soil stability and the proximity of obstacles like ditches, buildings or other equipment and power lines.
And, Damian pointed out, farmers should check the tractor and what’s being pulled to make sure brakes, tires and steering are in good shape. But that’s not all.
“Use pins supplied only by reputable dealers and farm parts stores," she continued. "Low-cost hitch pins from some sources may be inferior and then ensure that the pin is securely locked in place.”
