The Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Weights and Measures team works with gas stations to insure that you are getting what you’re paying for, but also look out for card skimmers.

Mike Louisell said this has become an increasing problem throughout the country.

“The Washington State Department of Agriculture has responded to skimming problems at gas stations in Olympia, Yakima and the Tri-Cities. The city of Seattle has also seen cases.”

We’ve all heard about these skimmers and with harvest season underway, it’s critical to make sure that you are vigilant regarding potential identity and/or credit card theft.

Louisell said they do have some suggestions for anyone who is concerned.

“As troublesome as it seems, you might consider using cash to buy your gas. That means you would have to go into the store, probably stand in a short line and wait. Or use your credit and debit card inside the business where no one has had an opportunity to tamper with their equipment.”

Louisell said using a credit card versus a debit card is safer and that it’s important to check your statements regularly especially if you’re concerned that you were impacted.
