Is it Worth It To Farm In Washington?
Is it worth it to be a farmer in Washington? That’s a question many in the ag community ask themselves with regularity, whether it’s daily, weekly or once a year. It’s also the focus on a recent blog published by Madi Clark of the Washington Policy Center. Clark told the Washington Ag Network the reoccurring theme from the farmer with whom she has spoken, is let the ag community do what it does best.
“[Give] the farmers and opportunity to farm instead of constantly having to go to Olympia, or constantly fight the next regulation or bureaucratic measure coming across the desk. Because they love to farm, they don’t necessiarly love to have to fight the next piece of legislation that hurts their ability to do so.”
Clark said burdensome regulation is the biggest pressure weighing down on farmers right now. And that’s led some to move out of Washington, taking jobs, ag production and much more. Clark said those interested in keeping Washington farmers in the Evergreen State need to connect the urban communities with the realities of 21st Century Farming.
“Instead of having this idyllic view in their mind of what it should be, of what it is like to live every day in rural America, and what regulations we face and how they can make our lives better by letting us farm, or by letting us bring in jobs.”
