It probably won’t come as a surprise to many farmers that wheat acreage is expected to drop eight percent in 2017 because of low prices, falling number concerns, etc.

 

But USDA Chief Economist Rob Johannson said the drop is taking us to, if you’ll pardon the expression, rare air.

 

“Winter wheat acres the lowest since 1909. The lowest spring wheat acres since 1972 at 11.3 million acres. Durham down 17 percent year-over-year to two million acres.”

 

Winter wheat conditions are 51 percent good to excellent nationwide, but there are extremes throughout the area with the West Coast mostly very positive.
