The first day of winter is still weeks away; December 21st, but that doesn’t mean Northwest drivers may not face winter-like conditions on area roadways.  And that can be especially true for passes and higher elevations.  The Oregon Department of Transportation is trying to prepare before the snow flies.  ODOT’s David House admits road maintenance positions remain vacant around the state.  But he said the goal is to at least meet the same service level as last year.

“Last winter was a little lower level of service than historically we’ve had," House said.  "But we think we can get to that point.”

Seasonal hiring was delayed until after the legislature passed a funding package for ODOT just over a month ago, which also pushed training for new plow drivers.  House said mountain passes are fully staffed, but lower elevations could be another story during a storm.

“There are times when we will recommend you stay off the roads for that amount of time. Reschedule your trip because it’s going to be either impossible or a lot more trouble than it’s worth.”

Before heading out this time of year, be sure to check area road conditions on the Oregon Department of Transportation's WebsiteWashington Department of Transportation Website, or the Idaho Transportation Department Website.
