Helping Older Drivers Stay Safe
Oregon’s Department of Transportation is asking family members to talk to older drivers who might need help assessing their skills.
This is Older Driver Safety Awareness Week. ODOT’s Mindy McCartt said they have resources on their website.
"Helping families have that open, honest conversation so that their loved ones can stay safe and stay independent on the road," McCartt said.
There's also a self-assessment tool an older driver can use to determine whether they're still fit to drive. McCartt said it's not something you want to wait to do.
"The earlier, really, families can start talking about those changes it makes those conversations a little bit easier," she said.
McCartt added having the conversation earlier might help prevent a crash or an injury.
