It’s been an active week on the trade front.  In addition to the recently announced tariffs on U.S. agriculture, China recently announced a duty on American sorghum.  Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue expressed his disappointment in the decision, and said he hopes it can be resolved sooner rather than later.

As far as NAFTA talks are concerned, those continue in Washington D.C. this week.  While few are expecting major announcements from talks, Perdue is still holding out hope.

“It’s one of those things where it isn’t over until it’s over.  We’re continuing to press for good results there that would help to relive the anxiety index out here.”

President Trump and Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe were on the golf course this week, talking trade.  In the past, President Trump has leaded on Abe about a bilateral trade agreement, but lately, President Trump has changed his tune, talking about perhaps rejoining the TPP.

“They have great respect for one and other, and I hope we’re able to make some real progress there.  That would be good news for farmers.”
