While it’s been hard on some producers, such as the livestock industry, as well as drivers across the Northwest, last month’s snow was welcomed news.  First those that use irrigation during the summer were happy to see the storms improve the snowpack.  Secondly, wheat growers were happy to see the white stuff, especially now with temperatures dropping into the single digits.

“I mean of course we don’t want the snow to stay on for months, because then you can get into issues like snow mold." said Washington Association of Wheat Growers Executive Director Michelle Hennings.  "But we do want snow on the ground, for the moisture and to protect the wheat from the cold weather.”

Northwest wheat growers had to contend with Snow Mold back in 2017.
