The Washington Association of Wheat Growers Wheat Ambassador program for high school seniors is now accepting applications.

Current ambassador Nick Schultheis said the year-long program allows the students opportunities to meet with legislators on issues for wheat growers, also speak for the wheat industry to younger generations and be part of the public face of WAWG.

“The thing I enjoyed the most was definitely going over to Olympia days and meeting with the legislators. That was a great experience for me. It’s kind of cliché, but it definitely shows you that there’s more to farming than sitting on a tractor.”

The two students chosen will also receive scholarships of at least $2,000.

Schultheis is now at WSU where he will major in Agricultural and Food Economics, but he said his time as a wheat ambassador was critical and he hopes others try to follow.

“It pushed me out of my comfort zone definitely and I think that’s really important in life to be able to step out of those boundaries that you have.”

Schultheis’ advice to prospective ambassadors is to write your story and most importantly, get great letters of recommendation.

The deadline to apply is October 15th.
