The Dairy Farmers of Washington, and many others around the country, have begun to realize that better they treat their cows, the better benefits they can reap.

Dan Wood, Executive Director of Washington State Dairy Federation, said that means things like good bedding, massagers and much more so that the consumers can be confident in the care.

“Letting them know that the cows are like athletes. If you take good care of your athletes, they’re going to perform well for you. That’s something that underscores what the consumer is interested in.”

Research has shown that animals with less stress and more comfortable surroundings are happier and more productive.

Wood noted that becomes especially important with work being done to make sure the cows are comfortable during these very hot summer days.

“Investments have been made in massive fans to go into the milking area, the loafing sheds. 24-hour misters where the cows can just walk up and get under a cooling mist of water.”

Wood said those have been set up so that it’s automatic or even be on demand and for the need of the cow.
