Wednesday Marks Taste Washington Day
Wednesday is Taste Washington Day. For the past six years, the state Department of Agriculture and the Washington State Nutrition Association, partnered with farmers and schools to feature locally grown foods. WSDA’s Mike Louisell said Taste Washington Day serves as a spring board to make children aware of the great foods grown statewide and how agriculture impacts the state’s economy. He said via the National School Lunch Progam Washington farmers sell produce to districts statewide, and nationwide.
“Our growers produced more than $63 million worth of food products that were distributed by the school lunch programs across America.”
Louisell told the Washington Ag Network Taste Washington Day also promotes healthy eating, now and into the future.
“Certainly the Governor’s office is aware of that and the school districts, and it’s just great that the Washington State Nutrition Association, helps sponsor this each year. Partnering with farmers who would like to sell directly to schools as a way get them to know more about farming.”
Eastern Washington School District participating in this Wednesday’s Taste Washington Event include Moses Lake, Methow Valley, Quincy, Grandview and Walla Walla. The Wenatchee School District will mark Taste Washington Day on October 13th.
