After years of drought and short water supply, here is some welcomed news.  The Washington snowpack is well above average for this time of year.  At last report, the snowpack statewide is around 122% of average, primarily in the higher elevations.  NRCS’ Scott Pattee talk the Washington Ag Network not only is the snow sticking around it’s very wet, which he noted is not unusual.

“You know, we’ve had a lot of rain on snow and off and on warmer temperatures, which just helps soften the snow.  Basically we’re going in to that melt cycle, and so we have a really high moisture content.”

Pattee said it’s also encouraging that the good news doesn’t end with the snowpack.

“We just have great water supplies this year, ground water too, as we know it’s been raining a lot, and so the ground water has really reestablished itself after the last couple of years, water wells are going to be at some of their higher levels.”

Statically, the peak of the Northwest snowpack is March 31st.
