The recent USDA survey on local food marketing and direct sales showed that Washington State accounts for $150 million of those kinds of sales along with more than 5,300 operations that take part.

 

The places Washington 14th in sales nationally.

 

Direct to consumer sales accounted for nearly half of the $150 million and 41 percent of farms that participate in local food marketing are relatively new to the industry having done it for less than five years.

 

Washington was better than the average in the nation with 40 percent of farmers involved in direct sales being women, compared to 38 nationally.
