Harvest time has already hit the Northwest.  Not only for cherries, the first cut of alfalfa and mint, but also for the world famous Walla Walla Sweet onions.  Michael Locati, Chairman of the Walla Walla Sweet Onion Marketing Committee says harvest started on June 9th.

“We started probably a few days earlier than normal, which is nice, to get into the market place, and then sizes, you know, the earlier you start, you get some smaller sizes but we are starting to see an uptick as we move through harvest.”

Locati said they don’t produce harvest predictions or numbers, due to the fluctuation from field to field.  But he said this year’s crop not only looks good size wise, but this year’s quality should be excellent as well.  Locati added consumers should start to see Walla Walla Sweets in their neighborhood soon.

“They should be hitting the stores this week, and early next week, everywhere.”
