USDA has already modernized the food safety inspection system for poultry processing plants and is in the process of updating the system for swine, and now the agency is looking a similar move for beef.  Acting Deputy Undersecretary for Food Safety Carmen Roddenberg in Washington DC this week said, as in poultry and swine,

"There's a great deal of technological advancements and there are opportunities to gain efficiencies in how we inspect while still maintaining the same degree of public health protection."

For poultry and swine, the USDA developed systems to test in pilot plants, but Roddenberg says they're not that far along for beef.

"But I think you can expect in the coming months, we'll go out with a Federal Register notice looking for interest that the beef industry has in modernizing that relates to their technologies in order so we can look at how we can modernize inspections."

With the idea to remove unneeded obstacles for beef plants, while improving food safety.
