There are several financial and document-related considerations for those who are going through or have just completed  a divorce. Andrew Bingham with University of Idaho Extension in Ada County, said it starts with a credit freeze request with reporting agencies.

"You can also monitor your credit by requesting your credit report, free one each year so request one every four months from each one of those credit bureaus to make sure that  former spouses were removed and things were handled properly there."

Divorced spouses should also take care of insurance matters like changing the beneficiary of life insurance policies, updating homeowner insurance information, and removing ex-spouses from, and retaining eligible children on, health insurance policies. Another insurance consideration, is if there are children of driving age.

"You need proof of insurance if a cop decides well I'm going to pay for car insurance for the kids and the kids are driving a car with a custodial parent they need that proof of insurance in the car."
