For many producers, farming is the easy part.  The finances, not so much.  To help, University of Idaho Extension will kick off a pair of month-long financial classes next week.

Practical Farm and Ranch Financial Records starts March 3rd and runs each Monday evening, while Farm Financial Analysis kicks off March 4th, and takes place Tuesday evenings.

UI Extension’s Brett Wilder said while there is some overlap, the classes offer different financial information important for today’s operation, epically for small and starting farms.

“If you don't know where you're at, you can't improve yourself, and especially in the environment that we're in right now, we have a few commodities that have performed very well through 2024, but a lot of the crops that we grow are not necessarily at high prices, and input costs are very high," Wilder said.  "And if we can take a step back and analyze our financials a little better and think about where we're at in our business, what we're trying to accomplish, we can tighten the screws down a little bit and try to make ourselves better.”

Wilder added both classes are beneficial to producers of all walks, whether they've been farming for decades, or they’re just starting out.  He added agriculture has many ups and downs, and these classes will work to help producers weather that turbulence.

“The up periods is a little easier for everybody, but the down periods can get tight. And understanding where you sit with the customer and where you sit with your operation, and what works and what doesn't, is what keeps you here for the long haul.”
