According to USDA, there were 2% more cattle and calves in feedlots this on January 1st, compared to 2019 placements, and in December 3% more than a year before.  USDA Livestock Analyst, Shayle Shagam, said there are two more telling numbers in the report:   There are 4% more heifers and heifer calves in feedlots than a year ago Those heifers comprise a little more total inventory than one ago.

Last week's Cattle On Feed Report came with very few surprises for USDA Livestock Shayle Shagum.  He said feed lot placements usually peak in October, which is what took place.  He notes just under 2.5 million head went into feed lost last month, which is 10% higher year over year, Shagum said, that's not unexpected with winter pastures coming to and end in many areas.   ...
