A University of Idaho research team is refining what it calls a first-of-its-kind app allowing grain growers to instantly identify common pests as well as beneficial insects. According to school officials, once the app goes live, farmers will be able to take photos of insects common in cereals and other rotation crops to be quickly identified.

Researchers at Washington State University plan to advance their study of refrigeration to fight varroa mites that harm honey bees, thanks to two new grants. Brandon Hopkins, assistant research professor at WSU’s Department of Entomology, said the local bee keeper and tree fruit industry pushed to have this research changed from an observational study to one that is more in depth.

Earlier this month, Washington State University's Entomology Department received a $1.4 million gift. The funds from the James and Marilyn Oliver Hyde Estate are the largest one-time contribution designated to insect education and research at WSU.
