This weekend, the Washington Legislature passed a State transportation budget that includes a little more than $11 million for highway 26 in Whitman County.  Not only is this an extremely busy and important roadway for farmers across the Palouse and Central Washington, it's also important for those associated with Washington State University.

“70% of the students plus that go to WSU come from western Washington,” said State Senator Mark Schoesler.

The Ritzville Republican says the funds will add an additional lane on Highway 26 between Dusty and Colfax.  He said it’s all about safety.

"Coug Nation safety when they come to Pullman, for Dad's weekend, Mom's weekend, the Apple Cup.”

Construction could begin as early as next year.
