Spanish Immersion Program in Wenatchee

The Washington State University Chelan-Douglas Extension is hosting a four-week Spanish immersion class beginning Wednesday, June 15.

Ray Faini said they’ve had farmers come through to help communicate with their workers.

“We’ve actually developed a listing of words in Spanish that mostly likely would be used in an agricultural setting and words that a lot of people maybe wouldn’t know.”

Faini said they wanted to have words that could explain more complex agricultural concepts like chemical agents for spraying and more.

Several farmers have gone through the program according to Faini.

“It allowed them to get a foot in the door. It allowed them to say some words and use some vocabulary that the Spanish-speaking person understood.”

Faini said that can make workers more comfortable to know that someone is trying to speak their language and it can provide some clarity.
