Soft White Quality Looking Good

The soft white wheat in Washington is looking very good according Glen Squires of the Washington Grain Commission.

Squires said they’re very excited about this year’s crop.

“Harvested hasn’t started yet, but it appears that the protein will probably be down just based on current crop conditions. Soft white wheat needs to have a lower protein and that’s what our customers like.”

China, for example, is one of the major importers of Washington soft white wheat and it has to be low in protein.

Squires said recent buying missions from other countries into Washington have impressed those emissaries.

“We’re going to have a good quantity and we’re excited about what we have to offer the market.”

The latest USDA report, out this past Friday, showed that wheat acreage and production declined for spring wheat throughout the Northwest.
