The cosmic crisp apple has garnered a lot of attention already, but add new WSU President Kirk Schulz amongst the fanbase.

In the annual State of the University address, Schulz said he was introduced to the variety last year on a tour in Central Washington and it quickly became a favorite of his family, and he believes will soon be popular amongst a much larger group.

“We already believe that within a year or two we’ll have three million trees planted to do cosmic crisp apples. The year after that, another 500-600,000 planted.”

The first year cosmic crisp apples could be available to the public as early as 2020.

Schulz used the cosmic crisp to highlight the kind of work the University can do.

“It shows what can happen when you have a long-term research program that is working with local industry to make things happen and this is the fruition, no pun intended there, of lots and lots of years of research and working together.”
