It takes a lot of work to grow your crop and it can take just as much work to get that commodity where it needs to go.  And that means farm country needs good rail service.

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin sponsored the Reliable Rail Service Act.  She noted in a time of low commodity prices and high input costs, reliable rail service has never been more important.

“Part of this process is getting our products to market, and we do so in the ag sector in many different ways. Railroad companies are almost monopolies, or duopolies, some people have called it, among our freight rail services, and that means that they have given very shoddy service to many of their customers.”

This Will Help Build A Strong Economy

The Wisconsin Democrat said rail companies have a common carrier obligation.

“They preference their biggest customers, and they don't recognize that they have a common carrier duty to all shippers, and so my Reliable Rail Service Act helps us build a strong economy and lower costs for consumers and shippers by requiring the freight rail services to be reliable and to understand what their common carrier obligation means," Baldwin added.  "We define that, finally, in our legislation, so that we can help the enforcement agencies hold those freight rail companies to account.”
