According to the USDA, cattle numbers nationwide declined 2% during the most recent inventory count, while cattle numbers across the Pacific Northwest held steady. As of January 1st, the herd size in Idaho was estimated at 2.55 million, up 2% year over year. Of that, all cows and heifers that have calved totaled 1.15 million. Washington’s cattle inventory totaled 1.13 million, down 1% from 2021’s numbers. All cows and heifers that have calved hit 485,000. And in Oregon, the herd size was 1.25 million , unchanged from last year. All cows and heifers that have calved in Oregon hit 630,000.

Meanwhile, cattle numbers declined 2% nationally, to 91.9 million head. Of that, all cows and heifers that have calved totaled 39.5 million.
