T.J. Binns with Syngenta said if you’re going to have a successful season when it comes to weeds, now is the time to formulate your plan.  He added, regardless of commodity, it’s key to have realistic goals and objectives, meaning weeds are something you manage, not control.

“The best we can do is control them either before they get out of the ground or when they're very, very, very small, because as soon as those things come out of the ground, they are taking yield away from us," Binns noted.  "They are taking moisture, nutrients and then just the way that they're interacting with that crop is competition.  So doing everything you can to prevent them from coming up as a big portion of that.”

Binns added when it comes to your applications, timing is so important.  And that, he said, is where your local Syngenta expert comes into play, since they’ll have a better knowledge and understanding of the soil, weather, and other things that can help you have a successful season.

“Have a plan. So, the environment changes, they can get wet, the can get dry.  You can catch some snow and different things, right?  The main thing in my mind is to have a plan, have a solid plan.  That way you're not adapting to everything as you go forward.  Have a plan.  Yeah, we might have to tweak it as we go through the season, but if you have a plan to begin with, that's 90% of the battle.”

Binns added that weeds steal so much from your field, they can’t be taken lightly.
