Perry: Despite Challenges, I’m Bullish On NW Ag
Bill Perry, the new President and CEO of AgWest Farm Credit, is a familiar name to the Northwest farming community. Perry has been with AgWest for over 20 years, starting in rural Montana, and now working in Spokane, WA. Looking at the Northwest farm economy, he noted that while several commodities are struggling, there are a few bright spots, such as cattle and dairy. Despite the host of challenges, he remains optimistic.
“We know [struggles exist in the local farm economy], we've experienced that at AgWest, our customers know that we also know that farmers and ranchers are very resilient and innovative. And so, I'm certainly bullish over the long term about Ag in the northwest. It’s a great geography for food and fiber production."
Perry said one of the biggest challenges for producers is elevated input costs, which have remained high for multiple years at this point. Perry said one of the strengths of the Northwest farm economy is the diversity of the commodities grown in the three states.
“Well, the year ahead is going to continue to present challenges in in certain areas, I also think there'll be some opportunities and that's what's always so encouraging to see when you work in agriculture, you see folks that seek out those opportunities. Even in, in the face of challenging times.”
