NW Wheat, Barley, Corn, Acres Planted Drop

Many Northwest growers reported fewer acres planted this year.  NASS estimates 2.18 million acres of wheat were planted in Washington for 2019, down 2% year over year.  Winter wheat plantings total 1.7 million acres, unchanged from 2018, while, spring wheat acres are estimated at 480,000 acres, down 8%.  Oregon wheat estimates come in at 720,000 acres for 2019 all of which is winter wheat; that figure held steady from 2018.  Growers in Idaho, expect to plant 1.24 million acres of wheat, up 4% from 2018.  Winter wheat acres planted are estimated at 730,000 acres, up 1% from last year.  Spring wheat planted acres, are expected to total 500,000 acres, up 9% year over year.

Nationally, all planted wheat acres are expected to total 45.8 million acres, down 4% from 2018. Winter wheat acres are estimated at 31.5 million acres, down 3% from 2018. Spring wheat is estimated at 12.8 million planted acres, down 3% from last year.

Barley planted acres in Idaho for 2019 are estimated at 465,000 acres, down 15% from 2018. Oregon barley growers are expected to seed 40,000 acres, down 7% from last year. In Washington, acres planted to barley are estimated at 85,000 acres, unchanged from the previous year. Total barley planted acres in the United States is estimated at 2.55 million acres for 2019, up slightly from 2018.

Washington corn growers are expected to plant 170,000 acres this year, up 3% from the previous year. Corn planted acres in Idaho are expected to total 310,000 acres for 2019, down 14% from last year. Oregon is estimated to plant 80,000 acres, unchanged from 2018. Total acres of corn planted in the United States are expected to total 92.8 million acres, up 4% from last year.

All hay acres expected to be harvested in Idaho are estimated at 1.33 million acres, down 1% from 2018. In Oregon, all acres to be harvested for hay are estimated at 1.06 million acres, up 6% from a year ago. All hay harvested acres in Washington is expected to be 770,000 acres up 1%  from last year. Nationally, total acres harvested for hay is estimated at 53.1 million acres, up slightly from the previous year
