WSU researchers have released their latest forecast for stripe rust in winter wheat, and the October rains could play havoc with the crop.

Stripe rust was found in all six counties researchers observed and the high moisture rates have them concerned that this could see a similar outbreak as 2011.

Dr. Xianming Chen said if the winter stays mild, stripe rust will restart in early spring for a severe epidemic.

Growers are not recommended to spray fungicides at this time with winter upcoming, but WSU said to be prepared for early fungicide applications next spring.
