The dairy industry gathered recently in California at the 101st Annual Meeting of the National Milk Producers Federation in Anaheim.  For the last 20 years, the meeting has been held in conjunction with the National Dairy Checkoff. Chris Galen with the National Milk Producers Federation says there are many topics on the table for the dairy industry.

“An update on the process for the Farm Bill, looking ahead to the tax reform bill, which came out while we were there in California.  And then other issues that we’re working on the NAFTA talks for example, the mislabeling of imitation dairy products, all of those issues we gave an update on to our members.”

In regard to NAFTA, Galen says the positive is that the talks continue, but the negative is that no real progress has been made.

“How long will the U.S. continue to plug away at this?  Will there also be an effort by the Trump administration to throw in the towel on not just the NAFTA talks but the agreement itself.  It’s too soon to say that," Galen added.
