As debate continues in Washington D.C. over the 2018 Farm Bill, some have suggested removing the Food Assistance Program from the Farm Bill.  While the Food Assistance Program which includes SNAP, is a large monetary portion of the Farm Bill, Representative Dan Newhouse says removing it makes the Farm Bill challenging to pass.

“If you separate those two issue areas it’s very difficult to garner support for those parts of the Farm Bill that are essential for the success of the agriculture industry, like the research and the Extension, and all of the other things that we rely on.”

Newhouse said facing that reality, he feels it’s better to keep Food Assistance as part of the Farm Bill, ensuring broader support and passage when time comes to vote on the legislation.
