We are roughly seven months away from the current Farm Bill expiring.  And as discussions pick up over what should be and what should not be part of the 2018 Farm Bill, Representative Dan Newhouse says food assistance is an important part of the legislation.  Newhouse said farmers typically promote the importance of crop insurance and research dollars, which he agrees are vital to the Ag industry.

But to the Northwest economy as a whole, Newhouse said its important lawmakers go through SNAP with a fine toothed comb.

“The Committee has been working very hard to get deep down into the program to make sure that the people that need those programs are getting their benefits that we’re doing it as efficiently as we can and so, making the program work as well as possible

Newhouse noted that House Ag Committee Chairman Mike Conaway has worked very hard over the last two years to ensure SNAP runs as well as possible.

The current Farm Bill runs through September 30th.
