When President Trump pulled the U.S. out of TPP last year, it came with the promise that the Administration would seek bilateral trade deals, specifically with Asian nations.  But, 14 months later there are no new trade deals on the horizon.  Several Northwest Commodity groups, including Wheat Growers, Potato Growers, Dairy Producers and others, have expressed their frustration with the lack of movement.  Representative Dan Newhouse said he shares that frustration.

The Central Washington Republican said he is optimistic about a NAFTA resolution, which he said is vital to Washington Ag.  But when it comes to establishing bilateral trade deals, he’s very concerned.

“I’m not even sure I can say they’ve begun.  You know, trade is so important to our state that is an area of high concern for me, and one that I’ve been working with the administration on to communicate that we need to have those, in absence of the Trans Pacific Partnership we need to have these agreements.”

President Trump has acknowledged he would consider rejoining TPP if the terms were improved for U.S. businesses.
