Part of the USDA’s efforts to promote sustainable agriculture research and education is through a program of the same name that has been around for three decades now.  But as Deputy USDA Secretary Stephen Censky recently pointed out, there are new offerings, provided through the National Institute for Food and Agriculture.

“One of the interesting things, is the Sustainable Agriculture Systems Program, which is a new program.  And we’ll be investing $80 million in system level projects that are going to take an integrated approach on how we can improve agriculture productivity all in the context of improving soil and water health, productivity, an sustaining profitability of producers and rural communities.”

Censky said he sees the new program as an important facilitator to large broad scale research in sustainable ag.  With those projects translated on a regional, and perhaps even a local level.
