New Double Cropping Insurance Policy
If you’re a producer who’s been double cropping and insuring and you have added more land with the intention of double cropping that land crop insurance rules may prevent you from insuring both crops on that extra land
However
“We have made a change that will allow for a little bit more flexibility for producers,” said RMA’s Tim Gannon
Gannon added historically, if a farmer planted 200 acres of wheat, and then and followed that with 200 acres of another a crop, say soybeans, the farmer was capped at 200 acres. So, even if they added production they were not able to insure more than that 200 acres of double-cropping. But under the change.
“Now, we’re saying because they have insured and double cropped 100% of their acres in the past if they add 100 acres and plant 300 acres of wheat, follow that with 300 acres of soybeans they can insure up to that 100% of production because that is what they had historically done.”
The new policy will take affect for the 2017 crop year, beginning with winter wheat.
