NASS: Many NW Fruit Growers Expecting Larger Crops
According to NASS, fruit growers across the Northwest anticipate a larger crop this year.
Based on August 1st conditions, Oregon apple production is forecast at 190 million pounds, up 9% from 2020. Washington apple production is forecast at 7.40 billion pounds, up 7% from last year's production. Washington ranks number one in apple production nationally, accounting for 70% of the U.S. production this year.
When it comes to total grape production, the forecast is for 370,000 tons in Washington up 14% from last year. Of that 160,000 tons are forecast for juice grapes, up 9% year over year. Washington wine grapes are forecast at 210,000 tons, up 18% from last year. Washington is the second largest grape producer in the nation at 6 percent of national production.
When it comes to peach production, Washington’s crop is forecast at 10,000 tons, a jump of 21% from last year. Washington peach production is forecast as the sixth largest in the U.S. And when it comes to pears, production in Oregon is forecast at 230,000 tons, up 10% from last year.
Washington pear production, at 280,000 tons, is down 19% from 2020.
Cranberry production in Oregon is forecast at 610,000 barrels, up 1% from 2020. Oregon ranks third in the nation for cranberry production.
