The National Alfalfa & Forage Alliance is out with the 2019 edition of the “Alfalfa Variety Ratings”.  This year’s publication is intended to help hay and dairy farmers, extension specialists and anyone else in the hay industry improve yields and in many cases address pest problems.  Beth Nelson, President of the NAFA said this year’s publication has 182 alfalfa varieties from 22 marketers.

“All of those varieties that are included in the publication have been verified by the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies (AOSCA) and the National Alfalfa Variety Review Board (NAVRB).  So all of the varieties listed have gone through pretty strict and rigorous review process to be included in this publication.”

Nelson said NAFA also has an on-line database that allows growers to better customize their operation for their growing region and needs.

“Make sure you are selecting the right variety for your growing environment and this tool will help you do that.  And you’ll have more success the closer you link the variety that you choose to what you need in your area.”
