Micronutrients Play A Big Role In Crop Nutrition
Whether it’s spring, the heart of summer, or the transition from one season to the next soil health and crop nutrition is a priority for Northwest growers. Galynn Beer, National Product and Sale Strategy Lead at AgroLiquid, said in that effort to promote healthier crops, they offer a full line of micronutrients, in addition to the primary nutrients; nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
“And the primary nutrients always get all the focus because they're the largest volume," Beer said. "But one thing that we've discovered over time, and growers have discovered over time, those micronutrients really enhance the performance of those primary nutrients. And it really doesn't matter if it's on potatoes, or if it's on wheat, or apples, you can really help the performance of those primary nutrients by supplementing that with some micronutrients.”
Don't Cut Back To Save Money
Beer noted after several years of elevated input costs, it’s human tendency to look at pulling back on nutrient expenses in an effort to save some money.
“But I will tell you, especially when it comes to crop nutrition, is that if you will get a good balanced fertility program out there, it still always pays dividends," he said. "It helps that crop build in natural defenses to some things and it just will help it withstand any stresses that it might undergo during the season.”
Customization Is Needed
Beer added crop nutrition, micronutrient needs are not one size fits all. In fact, he said needs will vary not only commodity to commodity, but often field to field.
