Could a growers association focused on Canola be a reality here in the Northwest in the not too distant future?  Karen Sowers with Washington State University says preliminary conversations are taking place.

“It’s something that needs to be grower driven, we’re kind of in the beginning stages right now gathering interest.  We plan on having additional meetings in early June with primarily producers, but also industry,  that will provide the financial assistance to make that association real.”

Sowers says this is a good time to discuss Canola here in the Northwest.

First the Assistant Director for the U.S. Canola association will be in the Tri Cities June 5th for a variety of meeting, but plans to take time to speak about creating a Pacific Northwest Canola Growers Association.  In addition, because of the wet cool spring, many wheat growers are looking at rotating canola in their fields, and Sowers says now is a good time for growers to learn how canola can benefit their operation as a rotation crop.
