Idaho #3 Dairy Producing State In Nation
Idaho has climbed back into the top three when it comes to milk production.
In 2024, Texas passed the Gem State becoming the nation’s #3 producer of milk, behind California and Wisconsin. However, that was short lived, as Idaho regained that #3 spot last year.
According to USDA data, Idaho’s 350 dairy operations produced 18.26 billion pounds of milk in 2025, roughly 51 million pounds more than Texas By the way, that 51 million pounds that separates the two states, is close to just one day of milk production in Idaho.
USDA data shows Texas produces more milk during the winter months, while Idaho produces more milk during the summer.
This tight competition with Texas is a fairly new development for the Idaho dairy industry. Before 2024, Idaho had owned that #3 spot for about 15 years, after passing New York.
Dairy is a $3.9 billion industry for Idaho.
